Orange CR60C Review

Lugging around my Fender Hotrod Deville 212 for band practice is somewhat of a task, as the amp weighs in at 55lbs, so I was on the look out for something that had similar warm clean tones but much lighter.  I knew, what I wanted was a 1x12" speaker as this would instantly cut out the weight, as the Fender Hotrod Deville 212 has as the name suggests 2x12" speakers.

I never for one second thought of purchasing a solid state amplifier, as I have come to expect that wam tones come from valve amplifiers not transisters.  I paid a visit to Sound Affects in Ormskirk and was pursuaded to try out the Orange CR60C.  Tim the store owner, phoned down to his studio (also in Ormskirk) and asked them to setup the CR60C so as by the time we arrived, I could simply plugin and take the amp for a test drive.  From the first note, I thought this amp is a little special, it was much warmer than I had anticipated from a solid state amp.  I only played the amp for a little while and made a decision there and then to purchase it.  This is something I don't normally do, not without at least reading reviews, watching YouTube clips etc, but this little amp, had something perfect about it and that was warm clean tones and lots of volume (as Jeremy Clarkeson would say "POWER").

I'm not a fan of Orange by any means, in fact, I have always looked away instead of looking at them more closely, I suppose with me, its purely down to the colour, not the brand.

Having used this amp now for a few weeks, I can honestly say its quite a versitile piece of equipment, and I am truly glad I tried it out and made the purchase.  It is fairly light compared to my Fender amp, but its reassuringly heavy & well built at the same time.  It packs a real punch and the four stage dirty channel is awesome, true british rock tones, and so much better then the dirty channel on the Fender Hotrod Deville 212, which is more of a bluesy tone.  Both are great in their own right, but the Orange dirty channel, just has that Oooomph.

One of the important challenges of the practice amp, for me, was it needed to be able to produce enough clean tone volume to perform in a large band, therefore it had to compete with acoustic drums, a loud keyboard player and a brass section who always mic up, no matter how small a room we play in.  The CR60C came up trumphs and I am really pleased I made the discovery.

I suppose my lesson here, is don't dismiss something becuase of appearance, dig deeper and have a go.  For more on the Orange CR60C, visit their website

Orange have now pointed out that all their models now come in Black too.
